Homework Test & New Extra Credit Opp

For your homework tonight, read LOP & the handout I gave you in class. In addition, click on the link below, choose any of the tests listed, and click on one of the blue buttons to take the test. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete. If you would like extra credit, write one full paragraph about your reactions to your test results here.

  1. My results from the first test were "slight association of whites with weapons and Blacks with harmless objects". I've always been skeptical about the types of claims that survey websites make, however, the data shown from this first test was not surprising and should not be discounted. The majority of people that took the test had Blacks associated with weapons and whites associated with harmless objects, which may or may not be representative of the population. Too many facts are not known here, for example, the number of sample tests taken, the amount of retakes...etc. The fact is, there are outliers in every random sample, and I happen to be one of them. Im right round the 3% of people who took the test and associated whites with weapons, which is interesting but unproven.

By the way, on the featured test I scored a strong association with Obama and presidential qualities, over McCain and Presidential qualities. This quiz is probably more representative of the population.

  3. I have a strong automatic preference for straight people compared to gay people. Don't get me wrong, I am always open minded about everyone's sexual orientation. It is just the majority of the population mostly see themselves as heterosexuals, therefore have more interactions with them than the gay community. There was no surprise with the results considering I have not been associated a lot with the gay community (not because of choice). After finishing the test, there was still no surprise that the majority (25 percent) had the same results I have, while people on the other end had the least (3 percent).

  4. My results said, I slightly prefer dark skinned people to white skinned people. I would probably agree with that because I grew up with a lot of people who's skin color was either dark or slightly dark. Im guessing my results were somewhat correct, because i am more comfortable around darker people. On the other hand, if I grew up around lighter people my results may have been reversed. The test was interesting.

  5. II completed the young-old IAT. Results: suggest a strong automatic preference for Young compared to Old.

I think this is true to who I am. As bias as it sounds, I believe that each generation of offspring are smarter than their parents. Many of my friends have expressed this thought also and, initially, we felt sad or uncomfortable by this recognition. While I respect the elderly for who they are, it is hard for me to communicate on the same mentality as them. They were born and raised in a simple-minded era. In these rapid changing times, science and technology is only broadening. The options are becoming almost limitless. Call me "New Age" or what not, but I strongly believe my peers and I are part of a very special breed of homo sapiens. It is natural selection telling me to adapt with those ally, the younger population, who understand things in a more worldly and rational view.

  6. My results stated that i prefer black people over white people. This is not that much of a surprise since i have family that are from both white and black families. I have close black friends and close white friends. I do not think I prefer any one of them over eachother.

  7. I took the religion IAT. The result i got was "slight automatic preference for Judaism compared to Other Religions." I would say this test is inaccurate because i think that these psychological tests limit one's opinion, thoughts and beliefs to fully indentify a person into certain catagory. One answer leads to other and just like the disruption lists at the end, the results can vary due to those things that cna interupt my "test taking skills". Btw, the result did not match who I am. Although I am pretty open minded about who and what they say about religion, I'm a firm believer of my religion, Christianty.

  8. My result said, "a strong automatic preference for judaism compared to other religion." since i'm a chritian, i don't think this test is quiet accurate. However, judaism is the religion before Christianity was born. Even though we believe in same God, the fact that they don't believe in resurection of Jesus brings about the difference between christian and Jadaism.

  9. I thought this test was interesting. when i first looked at my results saying that i prefer light skinned people over dark skinned people i thought that that was wrong considering that most of the people in my life are of a dark skin tone. but when i thought about it some more i do see that i do sometimes feel more comfortable meeting new people that are of lighter skin tone. but i still question the accuracy of this test. i just wonder how they even put it together it seems like the test is too random and if some one was going too fast it could give them a wrong result.

  10. I had taken the Arab Muslim-Other people Test. The results were of no surprise to me. The result was that i mderately prejudiced towards arab muslims than other people. The reason why this wasnt a shock to me was because although ethinically i am Indian, but i was born and brought up in Dubai, a middle eastern arab country. That is why i am more inclined to towards them as i have grown up with these kind of people. About other people, its not that i dont like them, its just i feel more comfortable with arab muslims than others. Its just a matter of prefrence. And now that i have moved here, i am trying to get a hang of things a know "Other peole" better.

  11. I took the fat-thin IAT test. The data suggested I had a strong preference for thin people compared to fat people. I don't believe that it is a preference of mine, I think it's due to the fact that there aren't very many people that I would consider obese in my life. I do however feel that people are in control of their lives and have nobody to blame but themselves if they are obese. We should all want to be as healthy as possible.
