The author should have traveled the measly four miles to the No more Deaths camp. They would have contacted the boarder patrol had the immigrant needed urgent medical attention, and if he didn't they would have housed the man for as long as he needed. Ofcourse, contacting the Boarder Patrol is not a bad idea either, for the immigrant it is a slap on the wrist and deportation which is hardley enough to keep him from trying to cross again to reach his dream of working in America one day. Personally I would have taken the illegal alien to the camp, but that does not mean that the author did the wrong thing. Infact, the author was really debating over two right things, not a wrong vs a right. The wrong thing would have been something other than what he was planning on doing, like taking the man any further than the camp, or leaving him on the side of the road somewhere.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I know, Victor had the form of diabetes where his blood sugar level was constantly too low. If that was the case, I would do the following:
ReplyDeleteSince the author already had supplies in his vehicle, I would have Victor steadily consume sweets until I was able to transport him to wherever he needed to go. I feel that a human's rights is well deserved if Victor took his best efforts to achieve opportunity. If I did get caught, I will know it was all for a good cause
since i am not medically inclined to treat some thing that severe i would have probably went to the boarder patrol and by going to them i would save myself some jail time. something like diabetes can be serious if it is not manged. things like going blind and even death can come from neglect. not to mention that if he was the wrong type of diabetic and was given the candy it could have potentially killed him. so i think going to the boarder patrol would be the safest and most legal way to handle the situation
ReplyDeleteIf for some reason Victor would have came into my life I would have helped him get to Phoenix. After what he had gone through to get here I wouldn't have had the heart to turn him in. Some don't realize the extreme conditions these undocumented aliens have to endure for a better life. Victor was already feeling better I would have tried to get him as close to Phoenix as possible. I would have given him the rest of my food and wished him luck.
ReplyDeleteIn "The Crossing", the author gets himself in a difficult situation. The author can either choose to help the immigrant arrive at his destination or turn him into the BP. If I was in the author's situation I would have assisted the immigrant. The immigrant was found in a really bad shape and I would have helped him out because I would have eventually felt bad for him later on. I would have helped him out by sharing my food and then dropping him off in Phoenix, because it seems like the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteThe author sets himself in a predicament when an undocumented migrant named Victor asks for help to cross the border. Victor is hypoglycemic and tells the author about his medical deficiency. If I was the author, I would help him get there, but I would not take him to his destination directly. Since there is a abundance of food in the vehicle, I would take him to a location that is just a couple miles away from the camp, give him some of the supplies and wish him well.
ReplyDeleteThe author explains how every decision on the line is like that, somewhere in between. i think I would of done the same thing because we never know if we are right or not. Although I would of help him too by taking him to a place where he could be safe and could communicate with his sister. But that is when you find yourself trapped on not knowing if your right or wrong, like in the middle of a line.
ReplyDeleteThe author of The Crossing is faced with many dilemmas: assist the migrant to Phoenix? Drop him off at the No More Deaths camp? Get the help of the border patrol?
ReplyDeleteI feel that the author did the right thing. Taking the migrant 100 miles further could have put him at risk of further illness. Dropping him off at the camp could have gotten the author, the migrant, and the camp at legal risk. Leaving the migrant by himself could have also put the migrant at a health risk. First and foremost, the migrant was at risk because of his diabetes, so that would have been my priority. I would feel more at ease knowing the migrant is alive and well, even if he is back in Mexico.
In this inevitable difficult situation, i would have helped immigrant. Although i couldn't help him until he gets himself into the destination, i would have provided him some food and money. Since he had diabetes which i don't know how to treat for a nonce, i would have asked him what he need and give him what he need. I guess that's all i can do for him.
ReplyDeleteIf I was in the authors shoes I would probably be debating but instead of calling the BP I would take Victor to camp or at least drop him off close to it. I would hate to have to question weather I did the right thing or not. So I would just try my best in helping Victor. My best interest is his health and he was feeling better therefore it wouldnt be a neccesity to call the BP.
ReplyDeleteAuthor's contradiction to the "line" and how the line always relates to his life gets him to a situation where he does not know how to draw the line. But the Final line of the author is obligated to help victor. I feel that his decisions took much thought processing to execute into actions. Because it wasn't only the author's life but the Victor's life on the line as well. If I was put into author's shoes, I would have definitely helped victor with some extent to it. As we all know, immigration law in this country isn't as easily appraised. Knowing that all the neccessary supplies are in the car, i would have helped victor as much as the author have done or further if possible.
ReplyDeleteI don't really know if i would help the immigrant with getting across the border for fear of getting in trouble with the law but i would have definitely gave him some first aid however i could. Especially if he had diabetes because i have a family member with diabetes and know how life threatening it can get. Reason being is that he is just someone trying to make a better life for himself and i wouldn't want to get in the way of that.
